Hi Families,
This week was an exciting one for our third graders as we went on our first field trip to join the Lloyd Center in tagging Monarch butterflies at Gooseberry Island in Westport. It was a windy day, but we tagged a season record of 25 butterflies! We will benefit from the data that each of those butterflies bring as they make their way to Mexico. This trip also ushered in our Mexico studies and in the coming weeks we will learn more about this country and its culture. Our students have also been enjoying reading Here's Hank, a prequel to the Hank Zipzer series, which our students will be reading next summer as part of their transition to fourth grade. They have been reading this book with Ms. Velazquez, which has provided a wonderful opportunity for our students to bond with her. The main character, Hank, is in second grade and has undiagnosed dyslexia; so many of our students have connected with his feelings and experiences at school, and the reading of this book has spurred many meaningful conversations. In math, we are solidifying our understanding of place value and deepening our sense of numbers to 10,000 through a variety of in class activities and IXL practice. We also had our first Band of Friends practice. This is a special group of third grade, and select fourth and fifth graders who form a chorus that performs throughout the school year. It meets last period on Fridays and is a joyous way to end the week! All the best, Mrs. Tavares
